1. Assign a Number & Description to Each Flue
If you are measuring multiple flues and/or multiple chimneys, we recommend assigning a number for each flue, and identifying it for easier reference. This way, you’ll have all the information you need in order to make your selections

2. Determine the Inside Dimensions (ID) of Each Flue
Measure straight across the INSIDE of each flue pipe in both directions (measure across from side to side, not diagonally). These are the inner dimensions (ID) of the flue.

Note inside dimensions for each flue.

3. Determine the Outside Dimensions (OD) of Each Flue
Measure straight across the OUTSIDE of the flue pipe from side to side. These are the outer dimensions (OD) of the flue.

Note outside dimensions for each flue.
Tip: If the flue is rectangular, and you are also considering a rectangular chimney pot, you’ll need to know which way it would sit. So make a note of what direction the rectangle goes (e.g.: short way faces front).

4. Determine the Outside Dimensions of Each Chimney
Measure from edge to edge, straight across the top of your chimney in both directions. These are the outside dimensions (OD) of your chimney.

Note dimensions for the chimney that corresponds to each flue

5. Start Selecting Chimney Pots
Once you have the dimensions for your flues and chimneys, you can start to select chimney pots that you like. Try the My Favorites feature of our Online Catalog, which allows you to save a list of your favorite chimney pots. We recommend that you print out your favorites before leaving the site, so you’ll have them for easy reference if you have questions or are ready to order.

As a starting point, here are a few basic rules to allow you to narrow down your search for the perfect chimney pot:

  • Since your chimney pot must fit over the flue completely, with no leaks around the edges, the Base OD (outside dimension) of your chimney pot must be equal to or larger than the OD (outside dimension) of your flue.
  • Chimney pot Base OD refers to the Outside Dimension (OD) at the base (bottom) of the chimney pot, and is listed under every chimney pot in our online and print catalog.
  • Since you want your chimney pot to sit on your chimney, but not stick out over the edges, the Base OD (outside dimension) of your chimney pot should be equal to or smaller than the OD (outside dimension) of your chimney.
  • Chimney pot Base ID refers to the Inside Dimension (ID) at the base (bottom) of the chimney pot, and is listed under every chimney pot in our online and print catalog.

Putting Multiple Chimney Pots on One Chimney
If you are planning to put more than one chimney pot on a chimney (for example, where one chimney has multiple flues), then you will need to determine how much space each chimney pot will have available for its outside dimension. In this case, it is highly advisable to draw a sketch of all measurements on the chimney, including space around and in between each flue. Contact usif you need help!
